Jean Martin was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Her deep interest in art began at an early age. Lasell Junior College, Massachusetts School of Art, the University of New Mexico and several outstanding artists have provided her places of study to further this interest.

This dedicated artist shows stark strength, yet a definite delicacy as she exhibits her mastery of two mediums - oils and watercolors.

There is a subtle presence of people, either in times past or in the present. Her work speaks of a love for the inhabitants of the Southwest and of the land on which they work and on which they build their lives. Rural farm and ranch life has brought a change in her work. Registered Herefords, horses, a pet burro, and farm animals serve as subjects.

The size range in Martin's work is from miniature to large canvas. The first impression on the view is of detail, but the artist chooses detail with discretion. Jean Martin's viewpoint is not close up, nor is it panoramic. It is selectively focused to give depth and a wide angle view. A feeling of serenity is present in Jean's paintings.

Already acclaimed as on of our most outstanding Southwest artists, her works continue to bring numerous awards. Her diversification as to subject and media has provided works for many permanent and private collections throughout the country.

Jean Martin, also included in the book of Contemporary Western Artists, was featured in Artists of the Rockies and listed in Who's Who of American Women.
